Clean Your firearms! Many feeding, firing, and accuracy problems can be corrected by cleaning your gun. Simply running a brush through the bore a few times, followed by a couple of patches and then spraying the action with a little WD-40 is not cleaning. It is a slow methodical destruction of a considerable investment. Like everything else in life, you get out of it what you put into it! Clean Your firearms! You want to have fun, not frustration at the target range. You want to bag that trophy buck. You definitely want that firearms to work when, God forbid, you’re defending your home from an intruder.

If the firearm fails to fire in that situation, you probably won’t live to regret it anyway. Neither will your family. (Of course, you can hide in your room and wait for your local overworked and understaffed police force to come to your rescue. But that’s another subject.) Clean Your firearms!

Cleaning Tips -

Use a bronze wire brush for normal bore cleaning. When removing copper, heavy lead fouling, or plastic shotfirearms wad fouling use a nylon brush with Shooters Choice or similar bore cleaner. (Shooters Choice is a powerful bore cleaner, will eat bronze brushes.)
Run the bronze brush through the bore once for every round fired. (I prefer Hoppes #9 solvent for light cleaning).
If you are serious about the care of your firearms invest in a coated steel or brass cleaning rod. Aluminum rods are soft. They collect grit and particles that can scratch the bore.
Wipe the rod off after every pass through the bore.
Use a brass jag to push patches through the bore. Dragging a dirty patch in a slotted tip back through the bore is not what I call cleaning.
Use a bore guide or brass “bumper” to protect the chamber or muzzle crown from damage.
Clean the action with a blast of pressurized solvent such as Gun Scrubber by Birchwood Casey. It cleans without leaving a residue.
Oil Lightly! Oil attracts dirt! If you can see oil, you probably oiled too much!

If you’re concerned that you’ve oiled too much, try storing your firearms with the barrel down. Many people think the more solvent the better. However, this will damage the firearm. Use only the solvent that the patch will absorb. If you see too much, the solvent or oil will drip down into the trigger mechanism. This will cause a gummy trigger. If you use too much oil, it will drain back toward the stock and cause premature failure of the wood. This will prevent oil or solvent from seeping into the wooden stock.
Strip clean about every 800 rounds or so. If you don’t know how and don’t have an owners manual, take the firearms to a gun smith. It doesn’t cost that much. (It’s cheaper than having him replace that spring that went flying into the recesses of your oh so clean garage or basement work room).

Finally, you really should wear safety goggles whenever you are working with gun-cleaning solvents. Even the not-so-toxic types are dissolving some very nasty stuff which can do some significant and permanent damage to your irreplaceable eyeballs if it lands in your eyes. As you run the bore brush in and out of the bore, the stuff is going to spray around a bit no matter how careful you are, so you do need full eye protection.

13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime.

14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence.

15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies.

16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.

17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.

18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers.

19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education.

20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.

21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges.

22. Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations.

23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health.

Online ammunition sales are legal

Under federal law, firearms dealers must obtain federal licenses and keep records of their weapons transactions, but there’s virtually no federal regulation of ammunition suppliers or sales – though there was before 1986. Adults who want to stockpile large amounts of ammo can buy it from dozens of websites that specialize in bulk sales, often at low prices. Some sites hawk magazines that fire up to 100 rounds without reloading, which critics argue have been tied to deadly mass shootings and should be outlawed.

The 1986 Firearm Owners’ Protection Act made retail interstate shipments of ammunition legal. The law allowed ammunition to be shipped to individuals through the mail and eliminated prior record-keeping requirements.

Online retailers make up a relatively new and fast-growing segment of the $2.8 billion ammunition industry. And after the mass shooting in Aurora, Colo., they’re now in the spotlight.

Cartridge Sizes

Ammunition comes in different lengths, shapes, and diameters depending on the type of bullet or case used. If the case is really small, chances are it is a .22 rimfire cartridge.

Years ago a wide variety of rimfire cartridges were available. Today, only .22 rimfire cartridges are commercially available. They can come in 22 short, long, long rifle, and magnum lengths. You will have to learn how to identify them by reading the information on the ammunition box as the data stamp is not on the base of the cartridge.

22 Hornet and 222 Remington use a .22 caliber bullet but use a centerfire cartridge case.

A rimfire cartridge will travel 1300 feet per second while a centerfire cartridge will do over 2000 feet per second. The centerfire case is bigger than the rimfire case and holds more powder.

Ammo Industry:

While the total ammunition industry is worth about $5 billion, sales to non-military consumers make up about $2.3 billion of that, according to Bruce Hammond, director of marketing and communications of the National Sporting Goods Association.

Ammunition and firearms sales have been strong throughout the recession. Some enthusiasts are stockpiling amid fears that legislation restricting firearms could be coming down the spike during the Democratic administration.

Gun control advocates filed a groundbreaking lawsuit in Chicago Wednesday seeking to  make companies that sell firearms over the Internet more accountable.

The lawsuit filed by the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence specifically names Armslist.com, an Internet gun website that links gun sellers with potential buyers.

It was filed on behalf of the family of 36-year-old Jitka Vesel, a former Chicago elementary school teacher who was killed last year by a stalker. According to the complaint, the killer purchased the gun illegally in a sale facilitated by Armslist.

The lawsuit is the first of its kind against a gun website for causing a shooting, but attorneys said they hope the case will lead to stricter government controls for Internet gun sales that currently are largely unregulated.

“Gun sellers and website operators who knowingly funnel guns to killers and criminals must be held accountable,” said Jonathan Lowy, the Brady Center’s legal action project director and counsel for the family. “We as a nation are better than an anonymous Internet gun market where killers and criminals can easily get guns.”

According to the complaint, Vesel, an immigrant from the Czech Republic, was shot and killed by Demetry Smirnov, a Russian immigrant residing in Canada who had met Vesel online three years earlier. He stalked her to the parking lot of the Czechoslovak Heritage Museum, where she worked as a volunteer, and shot her 11 to 12 times with a .40-caliber handgun.

Smirnov was convicted of murder and is serving a life sentence in prison, Lowy said.

Lowry said that sales conducted over the Internet often have been linked to illegal gun trafficking, sales to minors as well as mass shootings at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University.
