Square Drops All Firearm and Ammunition Retailers

Square, Inc. – the up and coming mobile credit card processing company for the masses has decided to make a change to their user agreement today. I’m a gun merchant, so whenever a processor tells me that there’s a change to the user agreement it means my fees are about to go up or I need to find a new processor. In this case, it img_mobile_paymentswas the latter. Square has decided to drop all transactions related to firearm and ammunition sales as well as “weapons and other devices designed to cause physical injury,” whatever those may be. I took a quick skim through the language . . .

and I figured it was mostly boilerplate. So naturally, just to be sure, I hit CTRL-F and typed in firearm. Note, the bold sections are my emphasis.

Old Square Seller Agreement:

By creating a Square Account, you also confirm that you will not accept payments in connection with the following businesses or business activities: (1) any illegal activity, (2) buyers or membership clubs, … 23) internet/mail order/telephone order firearm or weapon sales, (24) internet/mail order/telephone order cigarette or tobacco sales,

NEW Square Seller Agreement:

By creating a Square Account, you also confirm that you will not accept payments in connection with the following businesses or business activities: (1) any illegal activity or goods, (2) buyers or membership clubs, … (23) sales of (i) firearms, firearm parts or hardware, and ammunition; or (ii) weapons and other devices designed to cause physical injury

In other words, before the change, Square was happy as a clam to be used for face-to-face firearms sales. But now, they don’t even want to be used if all you’re buying is something as innocuous as a new pair of grips for your 1911. All deals involving firearms are no longer allowed to be processed through Square.

Taking into account the sheer number of gun show vendors who sell knives, ammo and beef jerky (you could put someone’s eye out with that venison stick!), does anyone have ideas for adaptive recycling of all those square readers we can no longer use?

Square isn’t the only payment processing company that has chosen not to accept transactions that involve guns, parts or ammunition though. Others have the same or similar policies. PayPal has long refused to engage in any gun-related transactions. According to the policy posted on their website, PayPal cannot be used to pay for firearms, firearm accessories or ammo.

However, if you are a small business owner in need of a gun-friendly credit card payment processing option, there are some available. The NRA Business Alliance provides credit card payment processing, including transactions made over the Internet, and so does PistolPay, which launched just last summer as a PayPal for guns. PhoneSwipe is another payment processor that accepts transactions involving firearms and ammunition.

Square doesn’t only discriminate against firearms either. According to their Seller Agreement, they also do not allow transactions involving adult entertainment oriented products or services, including escort services, as well as drug paraphernalia, or any other “hate or harmful products.” Although there is no list provided as what is considered harmful.

  1. A customer makes a purchase — either online, over the phone or in person — and the billing information is sent via Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption from the customer’s browser to the merchant’s web server.
  2. The merchant’s website receives the information and in turn forwards it to the payment gateway through another SSL encrypted connection.
  3. The payment gateway takes the information and forwards the transaction information to the payment processor used by the merchant’s bank and then transmits the credit card information to the appropriate credit card issuer (i.e. MasterCard and Visa).
  4. The credit card routes the transaction to the correct card issuing bank. If the card used was an American Express or Discover, the processor acts as the issuing bank and directly provides an approval or denial back to the payment gateway.
  5. Once the transaction is received by the issuing bank, it is reviewed to ensure that sufficient funds are available to cover the transaction and then sends an authorization code back to the processor. If the transaction is approved, the code allows the transaction to be completed. If the transaction was declined, the authorization code provides the details as to why the transaction failed (i.e. insufficient funds, connection failed, etc.)
  6. The authorization code is then sent back to the payment gateway which in turns sends the code back to the merchant’s website or other device used to process the transaction.
  7. At this point the merchant can deliver the goods or services to the customer.
  8. At the end of business, the merchant submits all of their approved authorization codes in a “batch” to their acquiring bank for settlement, which is the process of sending the credit card and check files through the network for processing and payment.
  9. The acquiring bank accepts the approved funds and moves them into the specified merchant account(s). The entire process from authorization to settlement to funding takes an average of three days.
